Google Sync: Google calendar and contacts push mode on smartphones
Friday, February 13, 2009 22:45Google announces a new service for mobile phones: Google Sync is used to automatically return to its smartphone contacts and Google Calendar. BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile are already supported by Google Sync.
Not a week goes by without Google unveiled a new service for mobile phones. After Google Latitude – we recently presented – it is now the turn of Google Sync to its appearance.
Launched at the moment only in beta – like all Google products signed – this new service will enable many holders of smartphones have a calendar and an address book fully up to date with their version of Google, namely Google Calendar for the eponymous service, and Gmail for managing contacts.
Prior to using this new service: have a Gmail account – and of course be used to store contacts – use Google Calendar to enter appointments, and hold a telephone subscription for downloading data (data) with the payment plan or the Act.
Note that many of these services already exist on different platforms of the mobile market. Two main differences emerge in the case of Google Sync: the number of supported environments is quite high (BlackBerry, iPhone, Symbian and Windows Mobile), and the software is totally free.
A first conclusive test on BlackBerry
With about 500 contacts stored in Gmail contacts and forty appointment, our BlackBerry test was not particularly heavy. However, the first synchronization between the two environments has taken some time – about 5 minutes – in GPRS, but was successful. The Google Calendar has been completed automatically, while all smartphone contacts have been saved in Gmail.
Also tested on the iPhone – see the tutorial configuration on site using mobile Google – by Geek Blog – the operation was carried out in a few moments, and also successfully. According to the first returns of the blogger, the information will sync very quickly and push mode services between Gmail contacts and Google Calendar, and without having to restart the Google Sync application each time.
No integrated push Gmail mail
Big disappointment, however the side of e-mails from Gmail, since they are not supported by this new application. And it is true that Google already has many tools to access their Gmail emails, it would have been appropriate to find in one place the 3 major mobile services – calendar, contacts and mail – and unified push mode in a single application.
New sign of openness from Google respond to different mobile platforms in the market, Google once again proves that not only focus on Google Android. Thus, one can find today on most major smartphones market services essential for any person go.
