The new version of the Intel platform landed in the portable PC market as early as this summer. The new couple processor-based Intel chipset promises better performance. Among the news, the arrival of a standard WiFi rapid and high-definition video.
Intel has announced the newest version of its platform for laptops, consisting of processor and graphics chipset combining circuits and wireless. Its logo will soon in the coming weeks, decorate boxes of many laptops, general public and professionals, among the brands Acer, HP, Lenovo and Sony.
Called Centrino 2 so as not to confuse consumers already familiar with this name, this new platform offers first and foremost a new family of mobile processors.
Derivatives mobile chips “Penryn” already equipping the PC fixed over the past few months, these new dual-core processors are 5 for now (until 8 other models by the end of the year). These Core 2 Duo are engraved in 45 nm and clocked at 2.26 to 2.80 GHz. They have a main bus of 1066 MHz and a cache of level 2 up to 6 Mo. Three of them have even a thermal power dissipation (TDP) of just 25 Watts (Series Pxxx), or 30% less than previous models. These models of processors will be particularly interesting for the ultraportable category segment.
A deep sleep mode allows some elements of the processor completely extinguished when the computer is idle, thus further enhances its autonomy overall.
In parallel with these 5 chips, Intel is also launching a high performance mobile processor, the Intel Core 2 Extreme running at 3.06 GHz and a priority for the laptops high-end dedicated Thursday
WiFi fast and high-definition video
The new chipset (Thursday components) accompanying these processors, it supports the new RAM modules DDR3 and now includes the wireless specifications for the future 802.11n standard WiFi. This new standard allows to multiply by 5 bandwidth (up to 450 Mbit / s) and doubling the scope of connection to the standards 802.11 a / g. This chipset will take charge of the WiMAX connections in option (a technology privileged compared to the 3G) networks where available (primarily the USA and Europe).
It also notes the arrival of a new integrated circuit graphics more powerful than its predecessor (a real Achilles’ heel for the previous generation Centrino) for 2D/3D graphics, DirectX compatible 10. It can also decode high-definition video stream, and, while notebook PCs increasingly incorporate Blu-Ray.
An optional feature can also easily switch the functions of video processing circuit integrated graphics to the graphics card, ATI or nVidia for example (and this, without the need to restart the computer). This option allows the user to use as needed, the maximum graphics capabilities of his computer (for the game or an application greedy resource 3D) or to focus on energy savings compared to the performance.
For businesses, the Centrino platform 2 with vPro technology offers the functions of administration and security posts at a distance via a Gigabit Ethernet or wireless.
