WIND_RIVERWind River Systems and Intel will work together to establish a platform for Linux Mobile MID.

Linux and MID (Mobile Internet Devices) are well together, the combination of one and the other may act synergistically to help their development. Several projects for Mobile Linux MID are already well advanced (on thinking, for example, distribution Ubuntu Mobile) but it is yet another collaboration that is announced between Wind River Systems and Intel Corporation.

Both companies are specialists in their field (for embedded Linux and Wind River platforms for Intel board) and that is to help off solutions using the Intel processor low consumption Atom that Wind River will produce a specific commercial Linux distribution , But also middleware and mobile applications that meet the expectations of these products.

Meanwhile, the company contributes to Moblin open source project aimed at developing an open source distribution for MID in 2009. This is the second major partnership announced between Wind River and Intel, the first, unveiled in May on the computer automobile.

An alliance that needs to prove itself
For Ken Klein, CEO of Wind River, “MID have the potential to become the next engine of growth in the mobile industry.” Specifically, is seeking an experience of the Internet on MID similar to that encountered on the PC which is covered, but with mobile devices with displays size 4 to 6 “and an intuitive user interface.INTEL Atom

With its small footprint, its responsiveness and its high flexibility, Linux bend particularly well to these characteristics, confirm what analysts such as Strategy Analytics, which provide a market worth 17 billion dollars by 2014, or as those of ABI Research, which anticipate annual sales of 90 million MID from 2012.

It remains to solve the problem of Linux: its fragmentation into multiple distribution, preventing a consensus allowing all players to go in the same direction. By binding to Intel, Wind River hopes likely ensure massive support from the industry by 2009, the date set for the launch of its Linux solution MID commercial.
