Fujitsu: a module for Mobile WiMAX PDA and smartphones

The Mobile WiMAX in mobile terminals will finally land and Fujitsu wants to be part of the adventure. Its U.S. branch, Fujitsu Microelectronics America, Announces Mobile WiMAX chipset optimized for use in mobile devices, smartphones and PDAs.

Composed of three elements (baseband, radio frequency, energy management), it has a footprint reduced by 12 x 12 mm and does not consume more than 0.5 mA in sleep state in order to preserve the autonomy of terminals.

An emerging market to capture
With Mobile WiMAX markets from opening this year in the USA, Europe, Taiwan and Japan next year, opportunities for chipsets embedded expand considerably, although subject to the certification of WiMAX Forum.

The chipset offered by Fujitsu is expected to operate in the bands 2.3, 2.5 and 3.5 GHz, or all frequencies authorized WiMAX, allowing its use on all continents. It also supports MIMO technology and beamforming, which improves the reception inside homes.

This chipset will be included in various systems, the PDA smartphones through game consoles and navigation systems connected. The first samples of the module Fujitsu Mobile WiMAX available for manufacturers from August 2008.
