The Japanese group Sharp was rather discreet about possible projects for fuel cells to power electronic equipment, but the situation changed with the announcement of a battery methanol offering energy density greater than the competition.

Many specialists Japanese consumer electronics are working on projects of fuel cells expected to significantly improve the autonomy of our gadgets, such as Toshiba, which seems to have made good progress on the issue or even Casio.

As for the Sharp group, it was rather quiet on the subject. However, the announcement issued today shows that the fuel cell is also a hot topic, with a predilection for mobile devices or laptops.

Sharp Corporation Unveils indeed a pile methanol (DMFC industry or Direct Methanol Fuel Cell) which would offer the highest energy density in the world for this type of device, or 0.3 Watt / cc, to imagine fuel cells for mobile phones, electronic dictionaries (popular in Japan), PDA or small laptops.

The marketing is not yet scheduled
To achieve this result is a new three-dimensional structure made of multiple micro-cell line that was imagined, would increase the contact surfaces per unit volume while facilitating the passage of air, in which oxygen will react with methanol to generate electricity and waste non-polluting.

The energy density is obtained seven times higher than those of earlier prototypes developed by Sharp. And there is good hope to be able to reduce the size of fuel cells for reaching those of Li-Ion batteries traditional, while offering a superior life.

Sharp will demonstrate its technology stack methanol at the fifteenth Fuell Cell Symposium which takes place in Japan this May 15. The Japanese group does not take a position on a possible marketing, which could range from one year or two.
