Nokia belies the assertion of an article by Reuters, that the Finnish manufacturer planned to develop mobile phones with Linux, according to the site The Register.
Indeed, an article by Reuters published last May 21 and titled “Nokia eyes wider use of Linux in cellphones” has caused a strange confusion. This article reported the words of Chief Financial Officer of Nokia Rick Simonson at a conference of investors, apparently out of context.
The statements of Mr. Simonson on development and the growing importance of Linux in the catalogue Nokia does, from the viewpoint of Nokia, the internet tablets such as the N810. Indeed, this terminal compatible WiFi (WiMAX and soon the USA) already operates under an operating system based on Linux, and Nokia has just confirmed its firm intention to continue to develop this type of aircraft, still under Linux.
The Reuters article seems to confuse “terminal communicating” and “mobile phone”, two types of devices that may be very different.
Recall that Nokia Symbian control, designer of the operating system which equips all its smartphones. Symbian also accounts for more than 60% market share of smartphones. It is therefore difficult to disengage the manufacturer of this route at this time.
